Woah. That is, indeed, totally brilliant. And, check out how this move proves the point of the model-shift even further: by releasing the album in a Guitar Hero incarnation, Metallica are allowing their fans a way to forge a new relationship with their music. I guess our story's villains have come around to the enlightened side. In fact, one of the curious things Dubber has pointed out is that as the internet has taken hold in the music industry, demand for scores and tabs has skyrocketed. Apparently, in some ways we're reentering a culture wherein people like to recreate their favorite hits for themselves in their own home. It sounds to me a hell of a lot like when Beethoven's symphonies set for four-hand piano were selling like hot cakes. Just look at YouTube's gobs of teenagers plucking out their renditions of their favorite songs. No doubt Guitar Hero is not only a manifestation of, but also a technology that encouraged, this development. For Metallica to harness that is really a supremely clever maneuver. I think the real question now is whether Metallica will go all the way in selling relationship - not just product -to their fans by not suing the pants off 'em when they want to do what's in the very fabric of the internet to do: duplicate and share.

Eight years ago, Metallica famously opposed the idea of free music from the internet and became the face of the group we now see as backward fuddy-duddies. However, they are working the cusp of a new music trend: Guitar Hero. They're releasing their new album as a Guitar Hero 3 download, generating publicity and excitement for both the album and the upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica release. It's brilliant publicity for a new release, considering how much more attention a person pays to a Guitar Hero song than one playing on the radio or in headphones.

In five years, it could be standard practice for rock albums to be released for Guitar Hero and in stores on the same day. Who's missed the boat now?
